Saving and loading custom styles?

Hi,

I'm new to Technics. I recently got myself a Hammond XE-1 'organ' which has the capability to load Technics KN5000 styles. Since the Hammond doesn't offer the possibility to make styles on it (only plain rhythms), I'm thinking of purchasing a KN5000 so I can make the custom styles on that and use them on the Hammond.

I found the PDF manual online, but it's not detailed enough for me to figure out if the KN5000 is able to save individual custom styles to the floppy.

So the question basically is, is the KN5000 capable to save individual styles to disk, so that the style could be loaded into another KN5000?

Many thanks!

Re: Saving and loading custom styles?

Hi Sutur,

Yes you can do that. The KN5000 has advanced style editing and creation capabilities and the styles can be saved to floppy disk.

In addition of course you would be able to hook it up to your Hammond so that it plays through your Hammond speakers (or so that the Hammond plays through the KN5000 speakers) and by using MIDI you will be able to control one keyboard from the other should you wish. The Hammond also has a MIDI feature such that the KN5000 can be easily used as your second manual.

And of course you will be able to make use of our KN5000 styles in the members area... but you can do that already on your Hammond!

Best wishes,
Mike

Re: Saving and loading custom styles?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your reply. I got myself a KN5000, and indeed it's capable of editing styles and saving them to floppy. But the method is a bit awkwark. As far as I know, the KN5000 cannot save individual styles directly, it can only save the custom bank. And that bank cannot be read by the Hammond. Saving individual styles can only be saved using the 3 style memories A, B or C. So at the end, I get there, but it's a bit of a hassle.

It's a shame that the Hammond doesn't have style editing capabilities. One can create custom rhythms, but the cannot contain accompaniment data. That's where the KN5000 comes to use. But I think it will be a lot of work to make it sound great at the hammond.

Thanks again!

Hi Sutur,

KN5000 can save single styles as far as I know. What type of KN5000 files will the Hammond Load?

Cheers,
Mike

Re: Saving and loading custom styles?

Well, that's the thing, the Hammond documentation isn't very clear about it. It's compatible with KN5000 styles and I was able to load styles from this site into the hammond.

So I expected that a KN5000 style bank would be loadable into the hammond, but it doesn't show up in the display. The only file that I could load was a style which I created in one of the memories a/b/c and saved to floppy. That loaded fine into the Hammond. Only it sounded awful because of the sound mapping.

Maybe I have to dig a bit deeper into the KN5000. I'm amazed of the overall quality of that instrument. The sounds a pretty good and it offers a lot of features. I'm really a Yamaha fan, I think the Kn5000 is of the same period of Yamaha's PSR8000, which I owned in 1999 or so.

Thanks
Ton

Re: Saving and loading custom styles?

I would expect that it can only load the CMP file.

I suppose what you might be able to compare the KN5000 reference guide and the Hammond XE1 reference guide. Re-voice the KN5000 composer sounds to the same number as the Hammond sounds you want. It could work. At least you might be able to figure out what setting on the KN5000 results in the setting you want on the XE1.

Both reference guides are in the members area, I just added the Hammond one in case you don't have it.

NB The program number data sounds in all Technics reference guides are out of step by one digit. Technics start at 1 but MIDI starts at zero.

Best wishes,
Mike
